Faculty Awards for Outstanding Performance / Achievement 2011-12

The Faculty announced in April 2012 winners of the awards and prizes for outstanding performance and achievement in teaching, research and scholarly activities, and services for the year 2011-12.

Dr Alison Lloyd, of the Department of Management and Marketing (MM), won the Faculty Award for Teaching.

Dr Lloyd believes that students get the most out of their learning through active participation. To transfer knowledge and prepare students for life outside the classroom, she creates a learning environment for students with encouragement and positive comments. She inspires students to look at an issue from multiple perspectives in order to help them develop critical thinking. Dr Lloyd is particularly strong at getting students engaged even if the class is large.

Dr Mike Lai, of the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies, won the Faculty Award for Research and Scholarly Activities.

In the past four years, Dr Lai was awarded, in his capacity as sole Principal Investigator, four GRF (General Research Fund) grants and, in his capacity as Principal Investigator, one PPR (Public Policy Research) grant from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. As Co-investigator, he obtained another three GRF / PPR grants for projects undertaken together with his former PhD student in the department.

Dr Lai is among the world's top three high-impact researchers in shipping and maritime studies according to the Thomson Reuters (ISI) Web of Knowledge.

The Faculty Prize for Teaching was awarded to Mr Philip Chan of the School of Accounting and Finance. The Faculty Prize for Research and Scholarly Activities was presented to Dr Kim Min Chung of MM. The Faculty Prize for Services went to an MM team comprising Dr Warren Chiu (leader), Professor Cynthia Lee, Professor Xu Huang, Dr Wing Lam, Dr Wu Liu, Professor Eric Ngai, Dr Yi Tang, Dr Ivy Yang and Ms Cheriann Wong in view of their contribution to the establishment and operation of the Centre for Leadership & Innovation.
 

Four Faculty Students Win USFHK Most Valuable Player Award

Four undergraduates of the Faculty received the Most Valuable Player award for 2011-12 from The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK). They were

Ms Angel Chan, a third year student of the BBA (Hons) in Management programme, was the 1st runner-up in the essay competition 2011-12 organized by the Personnel Management Club of the Hong Kong Management Association.

Ms Chan wrote an essay and delivered a presentation on "The Gateway to Corporate Success: How to Achieve Synergy with Hong Kong and Mainland HR Capital under Different Work Cultures and Practices". She competed with undergraduates from other local universities and won the prize on 6 January 2012.

The Faculty held a mini retreat on 25 May 2012. On that day, members of the Faculty Board and the Faculty Management Committee, faculty and departmental research committee chairpersons, school and department heads, Chair Professors and other participants had an open exchange of ideas on a series of topics including the Faculty's vision and viable strategies for carrying out its mission. There was a discussion on the medium term development of the Faculty in relation to offering new educational programmes, conducting applied research and responding to the needs of industry. As the next Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), for the distribution of public funds to support research in higher education institutions, will be conducted in 2014, Faculty members exchanged views about the necessary preparations. There were also a review of the Faculty's internationalization and recommendations on ways of facilitating the progress.

The participants arrived at a decision about a new logo for the Faculty.

The Faculty has formed a strategic partnership with talent management firm Korn/Ferry International whereby the two parties will jointly deliver a new Leadership Development Programme as a component of the Faculty's MBA curriculum. Students will be appraised with respect to their leadership competence based on which Korn/Ferry will help them enhance their capabilities and advise them on continued development after the programme. The aim is to supplement academic knowledge with real-world development methods especially for enhancing the ability to lead in the Asian context.

The strategic partnership agreement was signed on 21 May 2012.
 

Seminar on Qualifications Framework and Upgrading Logistics Workforce in Hong Kong

The Faculty collaborates with professionals and the HKSAR government in promoting the Qualifications Framework and exploring the manpower needs of the logistics industry in Hong Kong. The three parties co-hosted on 30 April 2012 a seminar themed Qualifications Framework and Upgrading Logistics Workforce in Hong Kong. Keynote speakers and panelists at the event included senior executives from the industry as well as representatives from professional bodies and the government.

Qualifications Framework, launched in 2008 by the government, is a seven-level hierarchy that orders and supports qualifications of academic, vocational and continuing education. The seminar was hosted by the Qualifications Framework Secretariat of the Education Bureau and the Logistics Industry Training Advisory Committee. Co-organizers were the Hongkong Association of Freight Forwarding & Logistics Ltd, the Hong Kong Shippers' Council, The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in Hong Kong, and the Faculty of Business and the Shipping Research Centre in the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies at PolyU.

The Faculty's distinguished alumni talk series continued with the theme of Creating Opportunity through Technology on 11 May 2012.

Both speakers, Dr Hubert Chan and Dr Simon Leung, are DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) graduates. They discoursed on global information network and new generation information technology with special reference to the Chinese mainland, the 12th Five-year Plan and potential areas of collaboration.

Dr Chan, Chairman of HKC International Holdings Limited and Chairman of the Communications Association of Hong Kong, focused on the Internet of Things (IOT), a worldwide network of interconnected and uniquely addressable objects. Dr Leung, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft and Chairman & CEO of Microsoft Greater China region, elaborated on the new computing revolution.

A group of 38 CMBA (China MBA) students from Xi'an and Shenzhen went on a four-day trip to South Korea. During their stay in Seoul from 4 to 7 of April, they visited Ewha Womans University, Korea Exchange, Samsung, LG Electronics and HanmiGlobal Co. Ltd.

The Faculty's MBA programme was launched in 1990 in Hong Kong and 2002 on the Chinese mainland. Under the current OneChina MBA structure, students from Hong Kong, Xi'an and Shenzhen can choose to study for a subject in one of these locations.

PolyU held on 12 May 2012 its annual Consultation Day for JUPAS applicants. This year the event served both HKALE students and HKDSE students.

The Faculty of Business provided individual consultation on each academic award as well as the newly added Broad Discipline choice for HKDSE students only. Constituent departments of the Faculty hosted an information seminar on each programme.

JUPAS stands for the Joint University Programmes Admissions System. In 2012, the system facilitates applications from holders of HKALE (Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination) results and HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education) qualifications. Students of Broad Discipline have to complete the required courses on the common Year 1 curriculum of the Faculty and decide, by the end of semester one of their second year of study, on a target award.
